What is a Mill Test Report (MTR)?

An MTR is a certified document from the raw material manufacturer (the steel mill) that proves the chemical and physical properties of the material batch.

Key Standard: EN 10204 3.1

Always ask for a "3.1 Certificate." This means the test results are validated by an inspection representative independent of the manufacturing department. A "2.2 Certificate" is just a declaration of compliance and is not enough for critical parts.

The 3-Step Verification Process

Step 1: Match the Heat Number

Every coil of steel has a unique "Heat Number" stamped on its tag.

The Check:

Does the Heat Number on the MTR match the Heat Number on the material tag photo sent by your supplier? If they can't send a photo of the tag, be suspicious.

Step 2: Check the Chemistry

Don't just look for "Pass." Look at the elements.

The Check:

  • SS 304: Nickel (Ni) must be 8.0% - 10.5%. If it's 7.5%, it's not 304.
  • SS 316: Molybdenum (Mo) must be 2.0% - 3.0%. This is the expensive ingredient often skimped on (crucial for 316).

Step 3: Verify the Mill

Is the manufacturer a real, reputable steel mill (like Baosteel, TISCO, POSCO)?

The Check:

Google the mill's name. If the MTR looks like a Word document made by a trading company, reject it.
